The 3 Problems With Interval Training

1) Intervals can stop working if you do the same workout over & over

Yes, you MUST switch up your interval training every 4-6 weeks.

If you continue to do the same interval workout, you’re results will slow down.

So if you’re doing intervals and you’re stuck at a fat loss plateau, then it is time for a new interval workout.

2) Intervals can be dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing

Every year I read articles about how to avoid holiday weight gain.

Some of them are written on mainstream news or gossip websites and they’re usually rather trite. Let’s see, they include gems like these:

“Skip the party snacks, never go to a party hungry, mind your portions and don’t just decorate your tree, decorate your plate (with colorful veggies).” Maybe useful, but not so Earth shattering.

Then you have the more sophisticated blogs and websites that try to put a scientific spin on it all….

Usually they mention proper timing of refeeds, as well as post-exercise nutrient timing tactics, workout timing, planning that big cheat meal just right, fasting before or after and the retroactive damage control strategies after you’ve already made a glutton out of yourself.

Better than the aformentioned 3rd grade tabloid stuff, but even the science sites are missing something… something much more human

I’ve cracked the code on avoiding holiday weight gain.

It’s shockingly simple: In fact, it’s so simple, I think that’s why it’s overlooked. Here it is: Set a goal to IMPROVE over the holidays, not slip back or even settle for status quo.

It’s not that holiday pitfalls can’t be navigated, it’s that most people don’t even set their sights on success. They’ve given up before even getting started. “What’s the use?” they moan, “too many temptations!”

Ah yes, but most people do that “goal setting thing” in January and it doesn’t last long and you’re actually even motivated (for a little while) then, right? So what makes me think setting a goal for holiday fitness will work?

Well, aside from the fact that most people do NOT set “goals” in January (they make “resolutions” which are little more than wishes), setting a goal is only part of my solution.

The best way ever invented to avoid holiday weight gain is not only to set a real goal – to set goals “scientifically” – but to set up an accountability, social support and reward system to make sure you follow through and achieve that goal.

After years of hard work and trial and error, I’ve created and perfected such a system.

I’ve already done the set up work for you, and not only that, my system has now been proven two years in a row (this is our third year), so we KNOW this works.

In fact…

This works so well that this is probably the single most important revelation I’ve had in my entire fitness career.

Back as far as the 1990’s, I too, saw all those transformation contests, and I saw the before and after photos, which were impressive. But the cynic in me said, “It’s just a tool for promoting supplement sales.”

I may have been right that transformation contests have been used to help promote supplement businesses, but I was dead wrong in thinking that’s ALL they were.

Until I was the man hosting the contests myself and seeing all the inner workings, and not just how bodies, BUT LIVES, were changed, I never realized how real and powerful it was. And for that, I thank the fitness leaders like Bill Phillips (and his brother Shawn), who pioneered this idea years ago.

I’ve been awed, amazed, floored and flat out BLOWN AWAY the last 2 years in a row with the results I’ve seen during this “Burn the Fat CHALLENGE.”

Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle makes some outrageous claims, has a bunch of larger-than-life testimonials, and costs more than your average hardcover book. What you’ll find on a web search is a free discussion forum called the Burn The Fat Facebook group, which has several thousand members who support each other to implement the program. You’ll also find several Burn The Fat Yahoo groups. There is also a paid online support community (sponsored by Venuto), called the Burn The Fat Inner Circle, with thousands of members using the Burn The Fat system. Membership to this site is optional and doesn’t come with the e-book.

With a little more online research, it’s easy to find positive reviews and before and after photos of people who have successful used Burn The Fat to lose weight. You’ll also find some YouTube videos and blogs devoted to chronicling the training journals and nutrition programs of fat burners.

It’s hard to dispute that Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle is one of the most established fat loss programs online.  Not only is third party proof all over the Internet, this program has been around since 2002. A program just can’t survive that long on the web if there isn’t good word of mouth. And of course, we know this method has worked for bodybuilders for decades.

The final question then becomes, will it work for YOU?

Burn The Fat, Feed The  Muscle is a best seller and there’s proof that it works.  But it will probably appeal the most to a certain kind of person.  First, it takes effort and a significant time investment.  It trades focus, dedication and hard work to get significant, permanent and natural fat loss (as opposed to some rapid fat loss programs where you’re required to take drugs or supplements and where the weight is a lot more likely to come back).

Another thing to know is that the main focus of the e-book is on nutrition, and it requires counting calories and crunching numbers to create menu plans. There’s a lot of value in that kind of precision, but this approach may not be for everyone.  Some people prefer to just estimate portion sizes. Burn The Fat is probably ideal for people who need structure, enjoy planning and are detail-oriented (accountants, engineers, math buffs and other analytical types will be in seventh heaven). If you like to know WHY you’re doing something instead of just being told WHAT to do, you’ll appreciate the detail in the 300+ pages.  It’s definitely thorough. Encyclopedic even.

Here’s the bottom line:

If you want a quick fix weight loss solution, if you’re looking for what pill to take or if you’re not willing to exercise, then Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle is probably not for you.

On the other hand, if you’ve tried all the diet trends and fads, if you really want to know the (sometimes uncomfortable) truth about fat loss and if you have the discipline to make lifestyle changes, then you’ll find Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle to be an excellent investment that delivers what it promises – you burn off the fat, you keep your muscle and you don’t have to starve yourself to do it.

Chris Lopez’s Kettlebell Revolution 2.0

The Simple Kettlebell Revolution Workout

There’s a revolution going on in the training world today.

For the past 10-15 years we have been bombarded with every possible training method, new diet and exercise contraption to try to make things “easier”. To cut the distance traveled so that we can get from A to B faster.

As a result, we’re fatter and more confused than we have ever been.

We try everything and because of that, we’ve accomplished nothing. Each week some new book or shiny new toy is released and we’re told that we must have it because it proclaims to be the new “magic bullet” to get us those 6-pack-abs, or a 300lb bench or slimmer thighs.

The problem isn’t with the programs, it’s with us. We don’t give anything enough time to work because we’re constantly switching from one method to the other.

So because of all this, those “in the know” are going back to the basics. They’re saying “screw the gym” and are attempting to really simplify things. And I’m proud to say that I’m one of them.

I’m training at home (outside in my backyard). I’m using basic bodyweight movements (push-ups, chins, dips & pistols) and I’m using kettlebells.

Why Kettlebells?

Because they’re simple, unrefined and they’ve been around longer than the “pec deck”.

Because you can’t get any more basic than an iron cannon ball with a handle on it.

Its simple design is intimidating to some and unappealing to most.

They were the tool of choice for Russian strongmen and military personnel alike back when they were first conceived over 100 years ago. And they’re slowly gaining popularity again because people are sick of the BS.

My favorite KB is a 24kg all-in-one-gym in the trunk of my VW.

It’s a  weathered piece of metal with bumps and bruises, much like my own, and it looks like it’s been through hell and back. I’ve swung it, snatched it, thrown it and slammed it.

It’s been battered and bruised and, thus far in my 18 years of using myself as a training guinea pig, has given me the most results in the least amount of time.

When I train with kettlebell workouts and combine the most primitive bodyweight movements I get a workout done sometimes in less time than it takes the average person to drive to the gym.

Don’t believe me? Give this circuit a shot and see if you think any different…

1) Snatch x 15 per arm
2) Chin-up x 10
3) Clean & Push Press x 10 per arm
4) Spiderman Push-Ups x 20
5) Turkish Get-Ups x 5 per side
6) 2-Arm Swings x 25

Rest 1-minute and repeat 3 to 5 more times.

I went to the gym for one of my 45-minute workouts and quickly found myself surrounded by a bunch of weight belt wearing, orange juice carrying bodybuilders.
